Model Overview
The Wuling Hongguang MINIEV is an A00-segment fully electric micro runabout launched by SAIC-GM-Wuling, officially hitting the market in July 2020. Built around the core appeal of being attractive, easy to drive, hassle-free to park, and economical to run, it successfully opened up the affordable EV city car segment and became a bona fide blockbuster hit for the brand. Today, the lineup has expanded into a full model family comprising the Hongguang MINIEV Classic, Macaron, GAMEBOY, Convertible, 3rd Generation Macaron, 4-Door Edition, and the 5th Generation model. Official retail pricing covers a broad spectrum: the Classic version starts from around RM29,800, the 5th Generation model starts at RM42,800 post-trade-in subsidy, while the 4-Door Edition is priced between RM44,800 and RM50,800.
Design Language
The Hongguang MINIEV adopts a playful and charming design philosophy, with its petite, rounded proportions delivering instant visual recognition on city streets. The 2025 iteration onwards features a closed-off front grille with an integrated charging flap; expressive wide-eyed LED daytime running lights pair with a cheerful front-end contour to create a lively and approachable look. Along the sides, dual-tone paint schemes pair a contrasting black roof with vibrant body colours like Puffy Blue, Bubble Green, and Sweet Coffee, adding an extra pop of youthful energy. At the rear, rounded tail lamp clusters mirror the front styling, linked by a chrome garnish strip, while the number plate recess sits low on the bumper for a tidy, compact finish.
The interior carries through the exterior's youthful, cheerful design theme. The 2025 4-Door Edition features a "Caramel Cream" two-tone brown-and-white cabin scheme, where circular air conditioning vents match seamlessly with a floating central touchscreen to create a cosy, lounge-like atmosphere. In terms of upholstery, the 5th Generation model comes with dual-tone plaid fabric seats with thick, plush cushioning; the front backrests recline up to 164°, delivering a noticeable step up in seating comfort over earlier iterations.
Powertrain and Performance
The entire Hongguang MINIEV range is driven by a front- or rear-mounted permanent magnet synchronous single electric motor. The core powertrain unit produces a maximum output of 30 kW (around 41 PS), with peak torque rated between 85 Nm and 125 Nm depending on the variant. The 2025 4-Door Edition delivers an impressive energy consumption of just 8.9 kWh/100 km, translating to a running cost of approximately 5 cents per kilometre. As for acceleration, it completes the 0–50 km/h sprint in just 4.56 seconds, offering ample responsiveness for daily city dashes.
Energy is stored in a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) "Shenlian Battery" pack, engineered to prevent short circuits, electrolyte leakage, lithium plating, and combustion. In terms of travel range, the 5th Generation model is offered in two CLTC-rated options: 205 km and 301 km, perfectly catering to daily commutes and short-haul trips. Charging can be handled via DC fast charging, AC slow charging, or a 3-pin 220V domestic socket charger. On DC fast charging, a 30% to 80% top-up takes just 35 minutes, while AC charging takes around 4.8 hours to go from 20% to 100%. For 2026, the 5th Generation model also adds a battery thermal pre-heating function to ensure reliable charging efficiency in colder weather.
Chassis and Handling
The Hongguang MINIEV employs a mid-mounted motor, rear-wheel-drive layout that is rather unique among EVs in its class; placing the motor centrally helps balance front-to-rear axle weight distribution, reducing the tendency to understeer when cornering. The chassis setup pairs a front MacPherson strut independent suspension with either a three-link semi-independent suspension or a rigid axle non-independent rear setup, depending on the variant. For stopping power, older and base variants feature front discs and rear drums, whereas the higher-spec 5th Generation and 4-Door variants are upgraded to four-wheel disc brakes alongside Auto Brake Hold. The ride is tuned primarily for comfort, soaking up minor road imperfections well; however, given its short wheelbase and light kerb weight, rougher patches and larger potholes will still translate into noticeable body movements.
Cabin and Features
The Hongguang MINIEV's tech cabin has continually matured with each generation. The 5th Generation model features a 10.1-inch smart infotainment touchscreen with a fresh, playful user interface that supports a swipe-down shortcut to the control centre, along with four dedicated one-touch preset scene modes: Rest Mode, Camp Mode, Rain/Snow Mode, and Pet Mode. The air conditioning vents feature a circular layout, paired with an intuitive rotary drive selector for a clean and fuss-free layout.
In terms of seating arrangements, earlier and Classic models came in a three-door, four-seater layout, with rear seats primarily suited for short hops or occasional use. The 4-Door Edition introduced in 2025 alongside the 2026 5th Generation model adopt a four-door, four-seater layout with a tandem seat spacing of 793 mm, 454 mm of rear legroom, and 620 mm of rear headroom, significantly enhancing comfort for rear occupants. With the 50:50 split-folding rear seats folded flat, boot space expands up to a practical 838 litres. Up to 20 cabin storage compartments are strategically positioned throughout the interior for everyday odds and ends. Furthermore, the mobile app supports remote climate control and scheduled pre-conditioning, while future over-the-air (OTA) updates will bring Apple CarPlay, HiCar, and CarLink smartphone integration.
Safety and Driver Assistance
Safety has been a primary focus in the continuous development of the Hongguang MINIEV. The body features a ring-cage safety cell, with 1,500 MPa ultra-high-strength steel reinforcing critical impact areas. High-strength steel accounts for 67% of the body-in-white on the 2025 4-Door Edition, and 60% of the core structural frame on the 5th Generation model. In terms of passive safety, earlier base variants were equipped with only a driver's airbag; the driver's airbag became standard from the Macaron edition onwards, while dual front airbags are standard across the range from the 2025 4-Door Edition onwards.
On the active safety front, the 2025 4-Door Edition packs a segment-exclusive Electronic Stability Control (ESC) suite encompassing 12 integrated functions, including Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Traction Control System (TCS), Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC), and Hill Hold Control (HHC). The 2026 5th Generation model further incorporates an Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) with Auto Brake Hold. Driver assistance features include reverse sensors and a reverse camera across the lineup, with high-spec variants gaining an integrated rear parking sensor and camera setup. Essential safety aids such as low battery alerts and a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) are also standard across the range.
Market Performance and Reception
The Wuling Hongguang MINIEV stands as one of the most defining breakthrough models in China's new energy vehicle market. Across the full year of 2025, deliveries for the Hongguang MINIEV family hit an impressive 435,598 units. As of January 2026, cumulative sales since its debut have crossed 1.85 million units, maintaining the top sales position in the A00-segment EV category for 65 consecutive months and holding the global title as the best-selling micro EV of all time. On the industry recognition front, it scooped the New Energy Micro Car title at the 2025 China Automobile Quality Awards and led its segment in the 2025 pure electric micro car residual value rankings, retaining the top spot for five years in a row. In the market, it goes head-to-head with rivals such as the Changan Lumin (starting from around RM37,900) and Geely Panda (starting from around RM29,900), holding onto its market lead thanks to an ultra-accessible price point, a vast ownership base, and continuous product refinements.
